Flameproof motor supplied to Cepsa

~ WEG and Cepsa strike a partnership ~

WEG Italy, one of the WEG Group subsidiaries, has been awarded a significant contract for the supply of a 900 kJ frame size tube-cooled flameproof motor, to power a reciprocating compressor on a hydrogen gas recovery unit at the La Rábida refinery in Spain.

Partnering with Cepsa, a Spanish multinational oil and gas company, WEG has developed a unique, explosion-protected motor to meet the challenging requirements of reciprocating compressor applications.

A reciprocating compressor is a positive-displacement machine that uses a piston to compress and deliver gases at high pressure. They are often some of the most critical and expensive systems at a production facility.

Due to the extreme nature of the environment at a hydrogen gas recovery unit, WEG developed a direct solution that could supply the unit with all required protections inside one flameproof terminal box — certified for Gas Group IIC atmospheres containing acetylene or hydrogen.

This 1700kW, 16 poles, 900kJ, 6600 V, 50 Hz flameproof motor was entirely designed and manufactured at the WEG Maia facility in Portugal. The motor was supplied with all foundation and alignment tools, for increased mechanical resistance and durability. Specifically designed for this application, the WEG HV Service – ENAR (Europe, North of Africa and Russia) team also provided commissioning and start-up supervision.

“A key success factor on the project was WEG’s ability to provide all required protections inside one flameproof terminal box certified for Gas Group IIC,” said Pedro Miguelote, Business Development at WEG Portugal. “Additionally, the reduced motor maintenance through the use of automatic lubrication devices, and increased mechanical resistance and durability of the motor design and forged shaft made this project a success.

“the WEG Portugal Maia facility is recognized as WEG’s centre of excellence for the design and manufacture of flameproof motors, and once again has proven it is prepared to address the requirements of worldwide projects in classified areas.”
