SUTTON COLDFIELD UK | November 22, 2019 | With the next (sixth) season due to begin today, Formula E is the ideal stage for Schaeffler to present its expertise in the field of forward-thinking technologies and sustainable mobility. Earlier this month, Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler received a further boost when Audi and Schaeffler announced that they will continue to remain long term technology partners in Formula E.
Since Formula E was established in 2014, Schaeffler has been one of the most notable and successful contenders in this all-electric racing series. New technology – from the total vehicle to the powertrain and through to a radically modified battery system – as well as new teams, drivers and locations now mark the beginning of the second era of Formula E, in which Schaeffler wants to continue its success story.
The powertrain in the current race car, the Audi e-tron FE05, incorporates an innovative motor-generator unit that was jointly developed by Audi and its technology partner Schaeffler. This Audi Schaeffler MGU03 motor-generator unit is more energy efficient than its predecessor. 95% of all powertrain components are new, resulting in weight savings of 10%.
In the fifth Formula E season, Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler with Lucas di Grassi in the driving seat, clinched two victories (Mexico and Berlin) and five additional points – this is the best result of all teams. Daniel Abt clinched points in 11 of 13 races, which is also the best result in the entire field of drivers. In each of the five Formula E seasons to date, Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler has finished in the top three in the team standings. Lucas di Grassi was also one of the three best drivers in each season. In addition, the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team scored the most podium positions (40) and the most points (1,101).
The racing calendar for the sixth Formula E season includes 14 races in 12 cities (including London) on 4 continents. As in the fifth season, the next one kicks off with Ad Diriyah in Saudi Arabia, but this time in the form of a double race. The Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team will again be competing in the sixth season with Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi, making it the only team that has been racing with the same driver duo since the start.
“I’m delighted that Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt will be fighting for us again in the new season. We have two fast and highly motivated guys, who do a terrific job in the cockpit and as Schaeffler ambassadors,” said Matthias Zink, CEO Automotive OEM at Schaeffler.
