Finning launches new rebuild service for industrial engines

Energy and transportation expert Finning UK & Ireland has launched a new service exchange programme for industrial engines, such as those in tractors, crop sprayers, crushers and screeners. The scheme allows customers to trade in their old engine for a remanufactured alternative, giving their machine a new lease of life in the process. The new Industrial Rebuild Service Exchange will help operators save time, reduce delays and improve uptime, as well as provide a more sustainable option compared with buying new.

For heavy equipment, uptime is key. In quarries, agricultural environments or on construction sites, there may be a limited number of machines on site, meaning any maintenance must be completed as soon as possible to prevent project delays. Often, a full workshop recondition that involves reconditioning the pistons, liners, injectors and other major components can take several weeks to complete according to service guidelines. For some businesses, this is too long to wait.

Under the scheme, customers can select remanufactured engines at one of Finning’s Rebuild and Repair Centres (RRCs) and return their used one. Finning’s Cat® certified engineers can then recondition the old engine using genuine Cat parts and by following the latest Cat repair guidelines. Once the customer has selected their replacement engine, Finning’s engineers will customise it by installing or modifying any machine-specific components to ensure that the engine is suitable for the intended application.

The new process is quicker than a traditional rebuild because the customer can select an engine that has already been reconditioned and is ready for use. It is more cost-effective and sustainable than buying new because it involves recycling the engine.

“Engine rebuilds provide a cost-effective alternative to buying new and, with the new service exchange programme, we are going the extra mile by making the process faster,” explained Peter Hutyan, Product Manager for Energy and Transportation at Finning. “Many of our customers ask how quickly rebuilds can be completed and a traditional overhaul may not always be the solution because the timeline does not align to customers’ need to maximise their asset’s uptime.

“The new scheme means we can offer a more sustainable alternative than buying new to customers who can’t wait for a full recondition of their current engine,” continued Hutyan. “Whereas a full workshop recondition would normally take up to three weeks (subject to engine model and serial number prefix), we can now provide a remanufactured engine in a third of the time — delivering real value to our customers.”

As part of the service, Finning offers a twelve-month unlimited hours warranty on parts and labour. This package includes dyno tests that assess the engine’s torque and power. Each recondition will also involve Cat-certified engineers using genuine Cat parts.
