New muxponders enables 400G technology over single wavelength

To affordably increase the capacify of existing networks, telecommunications networks specialist Salumanus is now offering to the UK market the PL-4000M & PL-4000T Muxponder/Transponder from PacketLight Networks, the first solutions to deliver 400G capacity over a single wavelength using pluggable line optics. The new muxponders will help telco operators and service providers speed up the UK’s digitalisation plans, facilitating the transition from copper to fibre.

The newly available muxponders feature a 1U chassis and use dual 400G pluggable CFP2-DCO modules for coherent metro and long-haul applications. They can also support high speed applications with 25/100Gb Ethernet and 16/32G Fibre Channel.

The PL-4000T is a full optical transport solution of up 1.6T capacity in a pay-as-you-grow architecture. This means that the product facilitates scalability, as it can be adapted the network’s organic growth. The device has four slices, each supporting 1 x 400G transponder or 4 x 100G muxponder configurations and is interoperable with third party switches or routers. On the other hand, the PL-4000M is able to provide 10/25/100GbE, but also 16G/32G FC with a total device capacity of 400G.

The products support standard MSA pluggable modules QSFPDD, CPF2-DCO, and QSFPDD-DCO, and industry standard OFEC and CFEC. The modules reduce power consumption by more than 70 per cent and improve port density per 1U compared with existing proprietary, bulky solutions on the market.

“At Salumanus we are always looking for the latest technological developments and improvements,” said Marcin Bala, CTO at Salumanus Ltd. “We don’t just offer ready-made solutions, but we customise them according to our customers’ needs. The PL-4000T and PL-4000M, which are essential components of our Data Centre Interconnect strategy, are part of the latest generation of muxponders based on pluggable 400G optics. They ensure that network operators can upgrade to 400G, but still maintain the high standard of flexibility, modularity and power-saving capabilities they are looking for.”

The muxponders use DWDM technology, which allows enormous amounts of data to be transmitted on a single fibre with each channel at a speed of 400 Gbps and 48 channels per fibre pair. Because the networks are carried on distinct wavelengths, the channels do not interfere with each other, meaning they can use different data formats and be transmitted at different data rates. This feature is essential for maintaining data integrity and ensuring any security-related partitioning where needed, for example when there are multiple tenants in the same data centre.

“The UK is on a path of increasing its digital capabilities, which pushes network operators to develop the most effective solutions to implement these plans,” said Kris Fujawa, CEO of Salumus Ltd. “Products such as the PL-4000T and PL-4000M are essential for extending the abilities of transceivers by offering more speed over large distances, but also safer data encryption to help comply with the latest regulations. Our solutions are fully tested at our facilities for a risk-free implementation.”

Like all Salumanus products, the new muxponders are offered with a try and buy option, meaning that users will have the chance to test them prior to committing to their purchase. To find out more about our 400G solutions and to get in touch with the Salumanus technical team, visit
