More than 60% of European’s add snacks to their weekly grocery baskets. At Interpack 2020 (Hall 12, Stand E60) Fortress Technology will reveal how its top selling Vertex Metal Detector, equipped with automatic testing, is saving money, inspecting multiple snack formats and flavours and enhancing product quality. Fueled by consumer ‘snackification’ demands for quick, healthy on-the-go foods, big and niche brands are diversifying product portfolios. Anticipated to be worth US$31,039m in Europe in 2020[i], the addition of new ingredients, flavour innovations, own-label, sub-brands, pack sizes and nutritional concepts means that a snack companys’ average portfolio can easily comprise 100+ Stock Keeping Units (SKUs).
Interpack visitors will see how the slim-line Vertex metal detector system, measuring just 125mm in height with a circular aperture, can easily slot into existing VFFS packaging and snack checkweighing turnkey lines to enhance quality and consumer confidence. Supporting fast product changeovers, this throat unit is the only known metal detector of its kind that incorporates an advanced automatic testing program, addressing productivity issues, rising labour costs and staff shortages.

Designed specifically to inspect free-falling snacks, more than 700 new Fortress Vertex units were installed by snack manufacturers last year. To help future proof equipment, all were fitted with Halo Automatic Testing, saving manufacturers an estimated €250 a day on every product inspection line. Fortress Technology’s European Managing Director Phil Brown notes that for large scale operations this could equate to a weekly saving of €250,000 in labour alone!
Phil explains: “The costs associated with manually testing the performance of every single snack metal detectors at the start, end and throughout a shift (often hourly) and after every product changeover can be extortionate.”
Due to their compact design, having 200+ Snack Vertex metal detectors side-by-side attached to VFFS packaging stations and checkweighers is not unusual. Yet, these turnkey lines make access even more challenging for performance checks.
