Altra’s advanced braking solutions on display at LogiMAT 2020

Two of Altra Industrial Motion Corp.’s premier brands, Matrix International and Warner Electric, will exhibit at LogiMAT 2020. The brands will showcase their innovation and performance in the industrial truck sector with demonstrations of braking solutions for forklift trucks, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and robots. The range of products available on stand are key to developing Industry 4.0 applications for the intralogistics sector. LogiMAT 2020 takes place from 10th– 12th March at Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre. Altra Industrial Motion will be located in Hall 9, Stand A43.

To complement the show message – ‘digitalisation of intralogistics’ – Matrix International and Warner Electric will present how their comprehensive range of braking solutions can help businesses in the intralogistics sector develop Industry 4.0 applications.

Brakes for automation
The automated systems that are starting to populate the factory floor, such as AGVS, and industrial & collaborative robots, come with several braking challenges. These servo motor applications need to ensure optimal performance in sudden stop situations. In addition, they often need compact brakes that can fit into the machines yet still demonstrate highly effective static holding capabilities in order to accurately position and restrain loads.

Visitors to Altra’s stand will be able to look at key braking solutions from both brands that address these challenges. More precisely, Warner Electric will be exhibiting its range of PK brakes and its innovative IP66 FRCB brakes made of fibre reinforced composite materials. Matrix International will showcase its range of servo motor brakes (SMB). Both systems were developed to offer the level of reliability and performance required to support demanding robotic and AGV applications.

Careful design of braking systems
To ensure the optimal braking performance of robots and AGVs, businesses should also look for solutions featuring friction materials suitable for these specific applications. These should provide an optimal size/performance ratio to deliver high-performance small brakes.

At LogiMAT, Warner Electric will showcase how its highly functional non-sticking brake friction material, W134, provides an ideal solution to meet these requirements as well as support the transition towards energy efficient, fully electric systems. W134 is being applied to Warner Electric’s entire offering, including the recently launched CBTB family of electromagnetic brakes, which are able to effectively handle the high energy produced by large braking events.

Advanced monitoring capabilities
While robotics plays a crucial role in the factory of the future, another key element that needs to be implemented to deliver smart intralogistics systems is interconnectivity. This is the basis for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), which can support live diagnostics and predictive maintenance. To do so, advanced sensors and monitoring systems for brakes are fundamental.

Within this framework, Warner Electric will exhibit its WES (Warner Electric Sensor) at LogiMAT. This is a contactless monitoring solution that delivers highly accurate brake control. Another monitoring system of interest to visitors is a chip that can be added onto braking solutions from Warner Electric and Matrix International. This supports end users in receiving and processing large volumes of operational data from different devices in a Cloud-based environment.
