– AMETEK Land, a leader in industrial infrared non-contact temperature measurement, will reveal its innovative new SPOT GS pyrometer alongside its range of non-contact temperature measurement solutions for the steel industry at THERMPROCESS 2019, taking place June 25 – 29 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
This new, advanced non-contact infrared spot pyrometer, SPOT GS, is specifically designed for continuous, highly accurate measurements of galvanized steel strip temperature during the coating process. Combining AMETEK Land’s cutting-edge, non-contact SPOT technology with specialised software algorithms, the SPOT GS provides accurate steel temperature measurements at the exit of the zinc pot during the galvannealing reaction and cooling zones. Having such robust measurement capabilities enables automated furnace management that in turn delivers tighter control of product quality.

Successful steel production requires accurate measurements across a wide range of temperatures, under a variety of different conditions. In hall 9, at stand 9F75, AMETEK Land will demonstrate its dedicated solutions for key applications as well as customizable, flexible instrumentation that supports higher quality, lowers costs, and provides greater safety across the entire steel production industry.
During the exhibition, AMETEK Land will present a range of fixed thermal imaging and line scanning solutions, including the Near Infrared Borescope (NIR-B), LSP-HD Line Scanner and Slag Detection System (SDS-E). Providing high-resolution thermal information and backed by advanced software, these systems supply the information needed to keep steel processes running safely and efficiently. Designed to operate in the harsh environments found in steel production, these instruments are designed to the highest performance standards, optimised for making non-invasive temperature measurements at critical positions in the process.
AMETEK Land’s SDS-E uses a high-resolution thermal imager to provide an accurate and timely detection of slag carryover in the steelmaking process. Using the SDS-E has improved operator response time and consistency at the end of each tap. This results in a typical reduction in slag depths of up to 25% compared to traditional methods of stream monitoring.
Unwin continues: “There are major benefits for steel producers who use this technology, as a fast slag detection response allows plants to significantly reduce slag carryover. This results in improved yields, higher-quality steel, and a reduction in costly downstream processing. There are other benefits too, including reduced ladle refractory wear and improved operator safety.”
