Lane Motorsport hosts Loughborough University Formula Student Racing Car Development Team

2024 FSUK racing series starts at the Silverstone racetrack on 17th July

Lane Motorsport has hosted a visit by the Loughborough University Formula Student Racing Car Development Team (LUMotorsport) to their Slinfold Lodge, Sussex, manufacturing facility. Lane Motorsport is sponsoring LUMotorsport for the 3rd year running, providing technical support on connector selection and implementation, and offering supported pricing and FOC interconnect solutions utilising their many franchised suppliers such as EATON Souriau and Hellermann Tyton.

LUMotorsport has a team of around 50 members working on funding, design, build, testing, racing and promotion of a single seat racing car to compete in the Formula Student UK (FSUK) racing series, Europe’s most established educational engineering competition. 80% of students involved in the project go on to work in motorsport in areas such as aerodynamics and battery design. The 2024 FSUK racing series starts at the Silverstone racetrack on 17th July.

This is the first year they are looking to race their newly designed all-electric single seat race car in the FSUK Competitions. The new chassis development has brought about a large redesign of wiring looms throughout, requiring more lightweight and reliable interconnect solutions. The 2024 electric racing car has a number of innovative features including:

  • T45 tubular steel and carbon composite spaceframe chassis with a composite floor
  • 554V, 5.7kWh
  • EMRAX 228 HV LC Motor.
  • 10” Braid Sturace wheels with Hoosier Slick and Wet tyres.
  • AP Racing 2-piece billet brakes with laser cut steel discs.

During their visit to Slinfold Lodge the LUMotorsport team had a company tour, met the Lane Motorsport support team, and were shown the Souriau VAD and Weald Electronics assembly facilities, where they were able to experience hands-on exercises with Souriau 8STA, Elio Fibre and motorsport accessories. At the end of the visit the full FC Lane connector and accessory portfolio was showcased to support the final design of on car electronics.

Nick Wheeler, director of Lane Motorsport says, “We have been supporting LUMotorsport with their design efforts for a number of years and it was gratifying to meet the 2024 team and show them where the magic happens. Lane Electronics is a family run electrical connector VAD distributor established for nearly 60 years and it is part of our ethos to support both our local community as well as the next generation of home-grown engineers. Sharing our expertise with the universities competing in FSUK provides the race teams with support while providing us with insights as to the future of motorsport.”

Backed by industry and high-profile engineers such as Ross Brawn OBE, Formula Student challenges enterprising and innovative young engineers to grow their skills by developing, building, and running a single-seater race car. Over 130 university teams from more than thirty countries participate in the racing series, with all the cars built entirely by students who are hoping to go on to design, build or race cars of the future.

Lane Motorsport is a specialist division of Lane Electronics and was set up 10 years ago with the goal of becoming one of the leading names in the support and supply of electrical connectors and accessories to the Motorsport industry in all its forms.

Lane Motorsport provides the latest high-performance connectors and accessories and is committed to having the right product available from stock or with very short lead-times through a portfolio of franchised suppliers which now includes EATON Souriau, LEMO, Weald Motorsport, Hellermann Tyton and Nicomatic.
