OMRON Introduces 1S Series AC Servo System with Motion Safety Functionality

PLe/SIL3 safety functionality protects operators, machinery and products whilst ensuring higher productivity.

OMRON has launched its new 1S Series AC Servo drives and motors, which include motion safety. This ensures machine operator safety, shortens commissioning time and minimises machine downtime and production losses. Integrating motion safety functions into the servo drives and motors also minimises costs, components and wiring complexity.

Thanks to motion safety, manufacturers can avoid machine stops, avoid interference during an unexpected shutdown, and achieve zero-loss production, thanks to a synchronised emergency stop. The new 1S Servo series helps manufacturers to achieve both motion and safety control at the industry’s highest level.

Josep Marti, Motion Product Marketing Manager at OMRON Europe, explains: “If an operator on a manufacturing line is carrying out maintenance or making adjustments close to a machine during production, the machine can slow down to a safe speed, without stopping production. It will return to the normal speed when the operator leaves the area. And if the operator needs to intervene in the process, all axes can be stopped with the Safe Stop functionality and kept at a safe standstill with the Safe Operating Stop mode.”

Furthermore, on a packaging line, changeovers (e.g. when introducing a new film) are quicker, due to the Safe Direction mode. In the event of a machine stop, power can continuously be supplied to the motors, preventing products in the machine from being scraped and avoiding the need for an operator intervention. This reduces loss of production.

“By ensuring safe operation with the 1S Servo series with motion safety functionality, we contribute to increased safety and productivity in manufacturing,“ Josep Marti concludes.

The 1S Servo series is easy and quick to install, with just one cable connection: the power, encoder and brake cable are all in a pre-assembled cable with an IP67 connector. All safety functions are fully controlled via the EtherCAT network, reducing wiring and maintenance, whilst conforming with the maximum safety performance level (PLe).

About “innovative-Automation”

As a leader in industrial automation, OMRON has extensive lines of control components and equipment, ranging from image-processing sensors and other input devices to various controllers and output devices such as servo motors, as well as a range of safety devices and industrial robots. By combining these devices via software, OMRON has developed a variety of unique and highly effective automation solutions for manufacturers worldwide. Based on its reservoir of advanced technologies and comprehensive range of devices, OMRON set forth a strategic concept called “innovative-Automation” consisting of three innovations or “i’s”–“integrated” (control evolution), “intelligent” (development of intelligence by ICT), and “interactive” (new harmonization between people and machines). OMRON is now committed to bringing innovation to manufacturing sites by materializing this concept.
