Selwood supports innovative learning and activities programme for children

Selwood is supporting a pioneering community initiative that encourages learning and personal development in young people.

The pump and plant provider is backing St Michael’s Primary School, Widnes, in taking part in the Halton Mayor’s Award, a bespoke programme of exciting challenges and activities for 10 to 13 year olds. The scheme resembles a junior Duke of Edinburgh award and sees children from across the Halton borough in Cheshire take part in a variety of activities outside of school hours, such as orienteering, litter picks and learning outdoor survival skills.

St Michael’s put out a call for local businesses to help in covering the subscription fees for 37 children to enroll on the programme. Selwood, which has a branch in Lees Road, Liverpool, has fully covered the subscription costs.

The children have already embarked on the voluntary element of the scheme by removing plastics and other litter as part of a project by the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust, which is bidding to clean up the Mersey estuary with the help of schools. A team from the school was able to collect 23 full bags of litter.

Richard Brown, Managing Director – Pumping Solutions at Selwood, said: “We’re delighted to be able to help St Michael’s school and kickstart this exciting learning programme for all these children.

“With such a wide network of local branches across the UK, Selwood takes its community role very seriously. The Halton’s Mayor Award supports young people in developing new skills and making a positive contribution in their communities, so it’s a cause we are more than happy to support.

“We look forward to seeing how the young people progress through this rewarding programme.”

Paul Loughran, Headteacher at St Michael’s Primary School, said: “This sponsorship will make a massive difference for these children.  I would like to thank Selwood for making this opportunity happen.”

The Halton Mayor’s Award programme is organised by Young Addaction on behalf of Halton’s Children’s Trust and Halton Borough Council as part of an on-going commitment to improve opportunities for all children and young people living in the borough. The programme is split into four sections where children have to strive in all areas. The areas are: skills, sports, voluntary work and camp. Young People can achieve up to three levels of the award: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
